PM Modi goes on lion safari in Gujarat’s Gir on World Wildlife Day

On March 3, 2025, coinciding with World Wildlife Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a lion safari at Gujarat’s Gir National Park. This visit underscores India’s dedication to wildlife conservation and highlights the significance of the Asiatic lion, a species unique to the region.

During his stay, PM Modi spent the night at Sinh Sadan, a forest guest house managed by the state forest department. Early the next morning, he ventured into the sanctuary accompanied by ministers and senior forest officials. The Gir National Park, the sole habitat of the Asiatic lion, has seen its lion population grow, with the 2020 census recording over 674 individuals.

Following the safari, the Prime Minister chaired the seventh meeting of the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) at Sasan Gir, the sanctuary’s headquarters. The NBWL, comprising 47 members—including the Chief of Army Staff, state representatives, NGO members, chief wildlife wardens, and state secretaries—convenes to discuss and strategize on wildlife conservation efforts nationwide.

In a move to bolster conservation initiatives, the central government has sanctioned over ₹2,900 crore for Project Lion. This ambitious project aims to ensure the long-term protection and growth of the Asiatic lion population in their natural habitat.

PM Modi’s visit to Gir not only emphasizes the importance of preserving India’s rich biodiversity but also serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to protect and cherish the nation’s wildlife heritage.
